Cardboard can have to many things to make your chinchilla sick.
Ink, glue, ingredients that are toxic, you also have no idea what it may have come in contact with. I would offer wood chews and other heathy option for them to chew on.

A pet store will have cardboard tubes that you can buy for them to crawl in or chew on that are safe. Other than that i would just recommend plastic or metal things.

Well, I have rats (not chinchillas) and I give them cardboard to chew on quite often, and it's never caused any harm.

They will chew it up to shredds. Just metal and hard plastic are recommended. I hope this helps.

If they play with it, it is ok.
