When you want to change, pull up a loop of the original color. Then yarn over with the new color and continue the stitch. Make sure you leave a long tail of both colors for weaving in. NEVER tie knots in your yarn! They can come undone, plus they look bulky and ugly when you are done.

I like that.

I have tried to change colors by overlapping the two about four to six inches and working the two colors at the same time. I don't like these though. That area is thick and it can come apart.

So, what I like to do is simply put the two strings of yarn together and make a knot by tying a loop with both. I always pull each of the four strings to make sure the knot is really tight. I cut the ends and work the knot into my stitch.

Have fun and good luck.
