You likley have too many USB devices plugged in all at the same time.. Try maybe a self powered USB hub.. or unplug something.

Are you using any other USB devices that you have not used before? I would say you have two possible issues:
1) Too many USB devices drawing more power from the USB device host connection. Try removing some and see what happens.
2) An internal short in the thumb drive causing too much current draw thus shutting it off to prevent issues.

To find out your USB power consumption go to the following in Windows XP/2000:
1) Right Click on My computer
2) Click Manage
3) Go to Device Manager
4) Go to Universal Serial Bus controllers
5) Go to every USB root hub
6) Double click on the USB root hub
7) Go to Power tab

Mine says for example:
total power available 500mA per port
Keyboard = 70mA
Mouse = 50mA

try a differnet usb cable, sounds like its wore out or has a break in it.
It may also not be USB 2 which will make it slower
