Dems/Libs like to take credit for abolishing slavery, yet the Republican Party was formed in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists. Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president, signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves.

They also like to claim woman's right to vote but in 1896, Republicans were the first major party to favor women's suffrage.

Then there is the tired retoric of Dems/Libs pioneering the civil rights movement. They like to constantly invoke the name of Martin Luther King Jr. although he was a Republican whom Democrats opposed.

Why do they lie and steal credit for victories they opposed?

When the 19th Amendment finally was added to the Constitution, 26 of 36 state legislatures that had voted to ratify it were under Republican control. The first woman elected to Congress was a Republican, Jeanette Rankin from Montana in 1917.

it's because when the democrats say something to the world all they want to do is get voted in.. they take credit for it even if they didn't do it so they don't have to tell the world they lied to you. B/c if they lied to you their chances of there being any democratic power would be OVER!
ex: when they ran for senate , i thought they were against the war, but they haven't done anything about it beacause they no if we pull out it will be the worst mistake EVER!
Vote REPUBLICAN!

I have seen a few Presidents in my time, and can honestly say from what I have seen with my own eyes. The demcrats have made a big mess, and it is a republican that will come up and clean it up. But the sad thing is it takes a while to get it done, and by the time things are looking brighter, their is usualy another democrat in office who takes credit for it. I am neither a republican or a democrat. I have always voted for the man, not the party. Every President I have ever voted for has been republican, but if I thought a demcrat had the best interest of the nation at heart I'd vote for him just as easily, but I have never seen one. Lincoln I beleive had the best interest of the country at heart, as far as King goes, That would be another matter, and a long winded topic.

You are entirely accurate in your statements about the Republican Party and its focus on emancipation. However, women's suffrage is a mixed bag as to who helped the most. Republicans may have been the first to favor women's suffrage, but it was the Democratic President Woodrow Wilson who, in 1918 and 1919, asked that Congress to pass a bill allowing the Constitution to be amended. It was, and the 19th Amendment was ratified in the states in time for the 1920 election.

As to Martin Luther King's political affiliation--most blacks who were allowed to vote were Republican, because that was the party of Lincoln. However, I don't see how you can say Democrats opposed King, since it was Lyndon Johnson who was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. And thereby hangs a tale. 1964 marks the great shift in ideologies between the Democratic and Republican parties.

The Dixiecrats, the old Southern segregationists, left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party because of this Act. Sen. Strom Thurmond is a notable example. Many districts in the "Solid South" turned from Democratic to Republican, all based upon this change. And most blacks changed their voting registration to Democratic, as that party now better reflected their views on Civil Rights.

Understand that the Democrats were not always the liberal and the Republicans were not always the consrvatives. In the 1850's the Republicans were actually the liberals and the Democrats were actually the conservatives.

I think the most recent flip flop of the parties, not on consrevate and liberal but on an issue, was in the late 70's early 80's. The issue was abortion and the Republicans were for it and the Democrats were opposed. Then the religious right came out against it and womens groups came out for it and suddenly Ted Kennedy no longer was screaming that the murder of a human fetus was appalling and the Republicans were no longer saying they were for it. Political hypocracy at its best.

A side note, the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slaves. It freed the slaves in the states who were in rebellion against the US govt. As Lincoln had no power to enforce anything against the states who were in rebellion it freed no one.

I can't really answer the why with a real answer. They would say that the senate and the house have never truly had a majority and that they have made a contribution (however they figure that is truly beyond me, it really doesn't make sense) towards national security.

This "logic" is false. They, just like the GOP have members who might support a lot of their main ideals, but will migrate from the accepted "path" when the issue becomes serious enough, and then they have the cajones to try and take credit at the same time they are doing their level best to run away from the problem.

If they have any credit to take, it is for spouting the pure, unadulterated bullsh*t that they are bold enough to say that wakes up another USA citizen - every time the sound bite is played - to their lies and deception.

First of all, the modern Republican party has no claim to the part of Lincoln... they're ideologically separate at this point. The Republican party at the time was the more liberal of the two parties.

Regarding womens' rights and the civil rights movement, I challenge you to tie these to the Republican party in both history and ideology. The Republican party today carries no resemblance to that party.

I question your knowledge of the timing of support for suffrage and also your accusation that MLK Jr. was a Republican. A quick search online says that that is not the case... it first entered the realm of public Hoaxes when a Black Republicans group tried claiming that to get Black Americans to switch parties... turns out they were lying.

I believe the real question is Why do Republicans see fit to ignore and rewrite history?

I will admit that the Dems do take credit for a lot of things.

But I have noticed that any legislation to raise the minimum wage NEVER comes fromt he GOP.

And as to women's right to vote, the 19th Amendment came under Democratic leadership.

The republicans were in charge for all but 8 years bewteen 1860 and 1912. Why couldn;t it have come sooner?

Can you provide something that backs you basics here? maybe a link or something that shows that the dems take credit for most things they didnt accomplish? It goes back and forth with both parties taking credit for something they did not do. just as I saw one answer on here that the republicans come behind a democrat and clean their mess up. Well who will be cleaning bush's mess up? a republican or a dem? do you honestly think that if a republican takes office they will end this bloodshed?

this quote i remember seeing somewhere comes to mind for you.
"stop telling lies on the democrats and they will stop telling the truth about you republicans"
