If there were 25 people, it would be $3.00 each.
If there were 30 people, it would be $2.50 each.

if there were x people who were supposed to attend, the price per person would be 75/x

since 5 more people attended, the new price per person is 75/(x+5)

since the new price per person is 50 cents less

you get 75/x -0.5=75/(x+5)
75(x+5) /x -0.5(x+5) = 75
75x + 375 -0.5x^2 -2.5x = 75x
0=0.5x^2 + 2.5x -375
multipy by 2 to get rid of decimals
0=x^2 + 5x - 750

use quadratic formula:
x= [-5 +/- sqrt(25-4*1*-750) ]/ 2
x= [-5 +/- sqrt(3025) ]/2
x= [-5 +/- 55 ] / 2
x= 50/2 or -60 /2
x=25 or -30

obviously -30 won't work, so the answer is x=25
since x is the number of people who were supposed to come,
add 5 to get that the answer is 30

sure enough it works

75/25 -.05 = 75/30
3-.05 = 2.5
2.5=2.5
