Cutting up the credits cards is a good start, but you also need to close the accounts to make sure he doesn't request new cards. If there is a balance on the cards, it will be hard to close the accounts, but cutting the cards is a good start. You need to sit him down and talk to him about spending money, show him bank statements, etc...

Been there, done that! Been with my husband for 2 years and married for 8 months. He didn't beleive in banks until I came along. This is what I did. With each check I would put one-third into a savings account, one-third into personal checking account and one-third into a checking account for him. He only had access to his account. As for the credit cards, I did cut them up. He had a fit. So I told him that I would have the company re-issue them only now his credit limit is 500.00 and he is responsible for the payments. I pay the household bills with the personal account and the savings account is mine. When his account got overdrawn and there was something he wanted to buy, he asked me for a loan and I refused. Nothing he could do. He was upset with me for a week, then he came and thanked me for helping him to get HIS problem under control. He now spends his money on things that he needs and has his own savings account to save for what he really wants. Life couldn't be better for us. Good luck.
PS No yelling....that will make it worse. If he yells, that's fine. Not you. :)

That would be a start, also take over the bill paying and checking account. If you have direct deposit let him sit with you and show him the debits, some husbands don't have a clue as to how much money they have (or I should say don't have). Men are not the only ones in this situation, women too have a spending problem.

We now have 3 accounts: mine, his and ours. We know how much the bills are. I work - he works. X$ goes into the joint account each payday. What's left - he gets and I get (from each of our paychecks. I have heard it said to divide your amounts by %. Add your income together and find out what % you make and he makes. You contribute that % to bills and vice versa. Whatever is left is each of your spending amounts. If you don't work - I suggest you get a job so you have more say in it. Hope this helps.

I tried that. Didn't work. Finally after 19 years of marriage and an impossible to deal with mountain of debt, I quit and filed for divorce.
I'm the husband.
The spendrift was my wife.
What lies ahead? A lifetime paying off countless debts.

do not treat him like a child
write down all the bills and monthly pmts or est pmts
write down how much comes in
show him in black and white
he will realise the potential problem right there
Make a budget and follow it
good luck

YES! CANCEL THEM TOO IF POSSIBLE! Maybe get him into counseling and make sure he knows why you don't have the money. He may have some kind of spending addiction...
