You don't get to vote late. In some cases, you can have someone go to the elections office and pick up an absentee ballot as late as election day. You still must post the ballot by the deadline or have someone deliver it to a polling place (no postage needed) before the polls close.

Here's what my county says about it:
"A voter admitted to a hospital no earlier than five days before an election and confined to the hospital on Election Day may apply in writing for an absentee ballot to be delivered by messenger on Election Day."

If you have reason to think you might be unavailable, it is best to request an absentee ballot in advance. You don't have to prove extenuating circumstances. ANY voter can vote by absentee ballot. You can request an absentee ballot for the next election only or for every election (until you cancel the request.)

If your emergency keeps you out of town (like you go to a funeral) you still have a chance if you get to ANY open polling place. You can request a PROVISIONAL BALLOT, no matter where you live. If the ballot doesn't have the races you want to vote, just write you votes for those races on a blank part of the ballot. Your ballot will be forwarded to the correct county for processing. It is processed similar to an absentee ballot, but gets a different validation process.

If you're worried about that, why not go to early voting? You can also request a mail-in ballot--much earlier than Election Day.
