I want to download a MOD for starcraft, but I don't know if it will replace my game, or if it will come as a seperate program. I still want to keep my orginal game. Also, I don't know anything eles about MODs, so any info will help.

Ah, mods are a great way to enjoy a longer game life, and can be fun, unique experiences in themselves.
To answer your question, no, not all the time. Most mods do not permanently change the gameplay. Most have a menu option to use mods or play in the original mode. I don't have Star Craft (great game though) so I'm not sure how that one works. Some mods can change the game permanently, though reinstalling the game will usually clear that up.
My suggestion is to look on the Star Craft main menu for a button that will allow you to use mods; I don't know if there will be one, but it's worth a look.
So long as the mod doesn't adjust any of the core game files (i.e. DLL files, or data files) it should be fine. The worst thing that could happen, so long as the mod is legit, is that you would have to reinstall Star Craft.
If you do have to reinstall, keep your saved game files (usually ending in .sav or something similar) in a separate folder and put them back where they belong after. That should protect you, I hope. Good luck!
