In the "Setup" when the computer boots up. Turn the computer off, turn it back on and press the Setup key when you see a message. Usually "DEL" or F2 or F10.

When you boot the computer, watch for the instruction line that tells you what key to press to enter "setup", if will probably be f2 (function f2 key, make sure if you have a wireless keyboard the the function key is "on", but it could be "del" or "esc" key.

Go to the menu that has you boot configuration and set your 1st boot to "cd rom" save "f10" usually and exit.

This should now search you cd rom for the setup disc. You can also just "open" the XP disk in windows and click setup, it should boot and search for the disk.

Good Luck. I honestly think that since windows 3.11 windows 98 was the last good OS that Microslop has made.

Hope this helps

Most of the time all you need to do is put the CD in the tray and shut down the system as usual. When you restart the system the up grade should begin. Be sure your system meets the minimum requirements before you attempt the upgrade.
XP takes up alot of memory and most older systems can't handle it. If your sytem meets the requirements and dosen't start the upgrade with the cd in the drive open up the bios and set up for boot from the cd-rom drive.

It is not your Windows 98 setup; it is your computers bios.

When you start your computer you will briefly see a screen that says hit {a given key} to go into setup.

Go into setup and set it so your system boots first to the cd-rom drive.

You need to restart your computer and go
into setup. From there you can change your bios
to boot from the cd drive. You should be able to just put the XP disk in and do an upgrade anyway
without changing your boot options

You can change which drive it boots from by going into the BIOS settings before Windows starts up.
Peaches (above) is right.

Restart you system and start pressing the DEL key.
You will enter the system BIOS.
Go to advanced configuration and you will see "first boot device" and "second boot device". Select one of them to CDRom and the other to IDE0.
Save and exit.
Make sure you do not make any other changes as the sytem BIOS configuration is extremely critical for your system.
