The etymology of this phrase is sketchy but, I quote (from an etymology website): 'It's thought that the superstitious practice of knocking on or touching wood to avert misfortune might date all the way back to Druidic times, when trees were revered, but there's no proof of such'.

Can also be 'Knock on Wood'.
The phrases are usually used when one is already experiencing some good fortune and hope that it will continue.
The derivation may be the association that wood and trees have with good spirits in mythology, or with the Christian cross. It used to be considered good luck to tap trees to let the wood spirits within know you were there. Traditions of this sort still persist in Ireland.

It comes from the superstitious ideas surrounding the wood of the cross of Jesus. People would touch the wood of the cross as a way of gaining some protection from bad luck.
