People say they are false but I think part of it was real. I mean is not so hard to believe. The problem is that Greeks liked to add up stuff to legends. Like saying that things were caused by a certain Olympian god. Like the Trojan wars. It was too big of an event to have been fake and Achilles DIED. Why would anyone kill the hero? Also I don't think they would make Hector run around the walls like a coward. A real story teller would make Hector as brave or braver than the hero to make the opponent seem tougher. It was real! The problem is that they add stuff to it and now a days people think they are false because of the mysticism in the writings. Like for example. It is said that Achilles was killed by a arrow. That is the story. But the poets made it more fabulous with their addition saying that he was immortal and only had one weakness, the heel. And they say that Paris aimed his bow high but Apollo (Sun god) derailed the arrow and made it hit Achilles' weak-spot.. I've even read that it was actually Apollo himself who shot the arrow while Paris was hesitating. They just add all those things, but if you are able to read between the lines I believe you can get to the true story of what happen in those times :D Why are they important? Because those were the days of champions when you could see heroes and live a life of adventures, EVERYONE has a hero inside and having knowledge and evidence that these people most likely existed gives people hope of becoming like them xD Hercules - A strong man with incredible strength but great misfortunes Achilles - A swift and smart warrior who seek to be legendary. Just read between the lines and you shall get to the truth of it all :)

DON'T LISTEN TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the most amusing Greek Myth here!!!!!!!!!!

(This is appropriate only to those above the age of knowing what sex is)

There's this priest called Tiresias, and he was a priest of Zeus, one day he was walking on the temple grounds and saw 2 snakes having sex.

And he thought: "Ew ugly snakes I think I should hit it with a stick!" And he did so, and the snakes ran away.

Suddenly, Tiresias turned into a woman!

As a woman, Tiresias became a priestess of Hera (Hera is the wife of Zeus). So things go on, Tiresias married and have children and everything,

Until one day she once again found 2 mating snakes. And she thought "I should hit it with a stick again! That sounds like FUN!" and she did so, and she turned into a man again!

By this time, Hera and Zeus were arguing which gender had most pleasure during sexual intercouse. So they summoned for Tiresias and asked them the question:

Which gender had most pleasure during sex?

Hera was arguing it's the males who do so, Zeus says it's the female.

Tiresias said, if sex gives 10 units of pleasure, women gets 9 and men gets 1 of that.

This made Hera very angry that she's lost the bet, and struck Tiresias into blindness.

Zeus wanted to help Tiresias but cannot undo what his wife has done, so he gives Tiresias the gift of prophercy, and he became the first prophet of greek mythology!

read oedipus rex, perhaps the best greek myth I have ever read. It is the story of a boy who is exciled from his city, because he is to oracled to murder king and marry his wife, so the king went to murder the boy to prevent him from taking him to take his throne, oedipus was saved by a street person on a mountaintop ( he was to be eaten by the birds and left to die. On a crossroads one day outside the city, he is encountered by the king and ordered to get off the road so he could get by, he doesn't, a battle ensues, and he ends up killing the king and his security guards. Soon after the city is in turmoil w. no king and oedipus solves a riddle posed to him by the shpynx ( which no one had previously answered, you are killed if you get it wrong) the city becomes to life again, and they make oedipus the king. He then in essence marries his mother. Well many paragraphs later he finds out about the oracle when he was younger, his mom/wife kills herself and oedipus gouges his eyeballs out of his head, I believe w. his bare hands. It has been years since i read the story, but it is my alltime favorite, and i think you would like it

My personal favorite is Orfeas and Evridiki. It is a love story with a tragic ending. Orfeas was a man of exceptional artistic talent, he had a harp, present from Apollo, and played magnificently. His tunes were so enchanting that noone and nothing could resist him. When his one and only love died unexpectedly and Hadis took her to the underworld, he decided to do that which noone had ever achieved or even tried before. He decided to walk alive in to the underworld and retrieve his darling Evridiki. He enchanted with his music the notorius Kerveros, the three headed dog that guarded the gates of Hadis and got in the kingdom of the dead. Then he pursuaded king Hadis again by playing his harp to give him back his love. Hadis asked him of one thing, Evridiki would follow behind him all the way back to the world of the living, Orfeas was not to look back to see Evridiki until they had reached the surface. Unfortunatelly Orfeases anticipation was so enormous that couldn't wait that long, he had to see if his love was following and that Hadis hadn't tricked him. So he looked, he saw her only for a moment before the hands of Hadis started to pull her back again and she was lost for ever...
