Don't use a cardboard box for any longer than an hour! Hamsters can chew! and fast!

The plastic storage bins are an excellent solution. Though I have found that you can leave the tops off of them if they're tall enough (at least 12" tall). To leave the top off you need to make sure that there's no way to escape. So you need a climb-proof water bottle (Lixit makes these) or a water dish. You also need to be sure that the little guy doesn't have any toys high enough to launch himself of off.

Here's a great article by the California Hamster Association on converting plastic bins into permanent cages:

If you don't have a plastic bin, then a 5-gallon bucket or a garbage can would work. You could even use a bird cage if the bars are close enough together. You could also use a laundry tub (as long as no one fills it or the washing machine doesn't drain into it) or your bathtub. Don't use your sink as your little guy may be able to get into the overflow opening.

Beware -- hamsters can easily chew through cardboard. I would not put him in that. Do you have an aquarium that's not being used? That would be ideal.

Or try a plastic storage bin that has a lid and poke lots of small air holes in the top. But be sure to put some heavy books or something on top to weigh it down, or duct tape it closed if you have to. Even if it snaps shut, those sneaky little guys can sometimes escape from the weirest places.

You should put him in a cardbourd box and then put the box in your bath tub,so he doesnt get out,in case he chews though, for now and keep a close eye on him.10 gallon glass tanks are great for hampsters, and there only 10.00 bucks at wall mart, sometimes petstores have em for that cheap. You could buy a 1 gallon glass boul for fish from walmart for like 2 bucks if you dont want to spend that much.He wont get out of that.

Get a big cardboard box, put a mesh on top, where he can't get out from, and make sure you put something on the mesh to keep it in place.
