Do they perceive that the French don't like them? In fact, we Britons don't exactly have a warm place in our hearts for you yanks despite what your Neanderthal of a president tells you.
Britons do not consider Americans to be "brothers." And, yes, I can speak for most in the UK.

The French are not Germanic??? They are the descendents of the FRANKS (hence the name FRANCE) who were Germanics. They also have Celt blood.

I don't hate the French, but I know my history. We wouldn't have won the Revolutionary War without the French. They kept you Brits off our soil, gave us millions, gunpowder, etc.
Why the 'tude? You still sore about that?

You really queered the response with your hostility, but despite that I think your premise is correct. I'm always fascinated to see Englishman on American political talk shows speaking as though they are Americans. Not just Americans, but SuperAmericans. And it is accepted, whereas if any other foreigner was in that chair it would seem ridiculous.
Why?----- Because of the heavy English ancestry and closely related German ancestry here. Also the first Americans were British, including the founding fathers.
The French thing has to do mostly with their being Non-Germanic (Enlish or German) as well as Catholic. The war rhetoric is just an excuse for bigotry.

I'll make this sweet and simple. The British didn't support the war we are fighting right now and the French don't. I think I'm going to have to be on the French side this time.

You would have to supply more information before I could answer that question. For instance, are there particular Americans you know of who "love the British but hate the French?"
I haven't spoken to all Americans, but my experience is that there is a wide variety of opinions among them.
Have you conducted any studies that support your assumption?

Can you speak for all of the British? I am American and have been to several European countries, including (gasp!) France. I met lovely people there....and nobody hated me simply because I am American. Only the ignorant make generalizations like that.

Well, I'm an American and I prefer Germans over british and French people. My German Oma used to tell me that French people were dirty and they didn't take baths. As for the brits, well she had nothing to say, because simply brits aren't worth talking about.

Americans are upset because the French wouldn't be bullied into supporting the Iraq war.
I don't think we love the British or even think about you at all, except when you all mispronounce and misspell English words.
I got mad at the French because they reported me for posting a question in English on their Yahoo! A site. What a bunch of whiny people.

Personally I like both Britains and French people....but then again I love europe and even my fiance is european (he's danish and lives in Denmark). I'm sorry that you don't like us. We certainly don't feel that way about you. And you have to remember that our president doesn't represent all of us. Most of us didn't even vote for him. I certainly didn't.
