On average a broken bone takes fom 4-8 weeks to heal depending on the break. I've never done anything to break a bone myself, but my brother snapped his lower arm a few years back and was in plaster for 6 weeks before it was fully healed, and a friend broke a bone in her foot doing a handstand and was in a cast for a similar length of time. If it's a bad break it may be a bit longer, and there may be rehabilitation and physiotherapy afterwards to help with walking again. Age can also be a factor, when my gran broke her ankle it took months to heal and even then didn't properly. She was 78. The best thing to do is talk to the doctor about it, as they should be able to give you more information, based on that assumption that most cases are individual.

I hope your mother gets better quickly and everything goes ok :)

What type of break is it?

I broke my ankle in three places a little over a year ago (a broken bone on each side, plus a snapped achilles: it was excruciatingly painful). I also had to have surgery, and the recovery time was a little greater than that of a normal break due to the surgery and the snapped tendon. After my surgery, I wore a cast for three and a half months before having it removed, but had to walk with a crutch or cane for an additional three months because my calf had atrophied and the ankle itself was very stiff, which meant two months of physical therepy just to regain normalcy.

It sounds as though your mother suffered a similar break (I was told that it's rare surgery is performed for a broken ankle unless a snapped tendon or multiple break is involved), and she's having implants. If this is the case, she'll probably be off the foot for three to four months, and need an additional three months to be able to walk again.

Best of luck to you and her, I know how painful and frustrating the whole ordeal can be.

I am 25, I dislocated my foot which broke both bones in my lower leg (ankle) and I did it Christmas night, I had surgery the next day. I was told by 1 Dr that at 4 weeks I could be weight bearing and then at 6 I didn't have to wear the boot or a cast, this was the Dr that did the surgery.

Now I was in the process of moving states and my new ortho Dr says 6 weeks (with crutches) until weight bearing and then at 8 weeks we can get rid of the boot, but its still not going to be healed 100% an a slip or a twist and I can re-break it. it seems to be a long process. Good luck

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Did the doctor not tell you this or do you distrust him or her? It depends on factors such as your age, the break, etc. For example, if you are 60 or 70, it will take you much longer to heal than if you are in your twenties.

How old is your mother, what is her general health and what is her height and weight approximately? Then you will get a more thorough answer suited to your needs. If she is in her 50's that is one thing. If, like mine she is in her late 80's that is a very different story.
