Indie is short for "independant", as in, not on a major label.

It means the group is not on a major label, and the music doesn't follow a formula or fit it any of the mainstream catagories. The group follows thier own star so to speak.

its somewhere between alternative and emo. motion city soundtrack (i would say) is indie pop, and death cab for cutie is indie too. its great genre that isnt too mainstream

sometimes - if not many times, that's the best stuff...it's not commercialized, it's just the music.
