My nephew is 5 years old. We are not Americans and we don't live in America , but he is learning English. The school teacher is teaching him how to write whole sentences in cursive. I am not sure whether this is right or not. So what do you think ?
I am not quite sure if I got the term right. Cursive handwriting is when the letters are joined toghether not separated , right ?...

If he is able to do it, that is great! BUT, a huge emphasis is no longer put on writing in cursive due to the growth of technology. Instead, children are being taught to type on the computer. I am certainly NOT saying that he should not be learning how to write in cursive- as a matter of fact, I find that it is becoming a "lost art". There are several different styles of cusive handwriting such as denelian, zaner-bloser, etc. It is best that he learn how to write in cursive because it will help him read in cursive.

Do Kids Still Learn Cursive

At the age of 5 he needs to practice printing letters first. Most kids start in 2nd grade (around 7 or 8 Years old). If he has good printing maybe he can move on to cursive.

You have the correct term. I teach 3rd grade in North Carolina, and 3rd grade is when kids learn how to write in cursive (8 or 9 years old). For some children, writing in cursive is actually easier than writing in print, especially if they have delayed motor skills. This might be the reasoning behind teaching your nephew how to write in cursive now.

Bonnie grandmother/every child should be learning cursive some times you have to print and sign your name then what???? this is crazy and if I had a small child I would be at school asking when and why we are stoping - printing is much slower and let's face it not everyone will have a computer- there are a lot less fortunate people in the world and we all know that .

I don't think it is right to have a 5-year-old learning to write cursive when he's still learning English. I am an English-speaker and I learned cursive in 2nd Grade.

My child learned in the 3rd and 4th grade. She is in the 6th now and has a choice. She chooses not to use cursive handwriting. The teachers are fine with it. I'm not. I choose not to pressure her about it. As long as she continues to make good grades and study...
