when you mix alkali and acid together what happens to the temerature? if you know please answer.thanks xxx

You get heat, and stuff expanding. Try mixing baking soda with vinegar. It's a classic alkali / acid reaction. Just make sure you do it in a big enough bowl to handle the volcano.

P.S. - it's an exothermic reaction if it gives off heat. It's endothermic if it absorbs heat.

Heat is produced or used up. It can either result in an endothermic reaction, whereby energy is used up to produce the product. Or it can result in an exothermic reaction where heat is produced. Exothermic reactions are more common when acids and alkalis are mixed together and result in increased temperatures.

usually you get some heat and some nasty smelling gas -- depending on the stuff you are mixing... don't do this at home!
