"Living on a prayer" means putting your life in the hands of others, usually God. In order to live on a prayer you must have faith in someone or something other than yourself, and hope that everything works out. I'm assuming you got the phrase from the Bon Jovi song, and in that case, the two people in the song are just trying to survive this world, and they've done all they can and are now just waiting for the outcome and hoping it's a good one.

The phrase is usually used when people have nothing else to depend upon but prayer. Bon Jovi has a song about it.

It means you have nothing else but prayer on which to survive, for example, you're broke or starving or both.
Kinda like "running on empty" means no gas in the car and you're hoping either for a gas station or your destination; or that you haven't slept for a long time and you still have stuff to do; or that you haven't eaten for a while.

trusts 'god' not money to get them through... for some people this seems to work out... for others, their children are not wearing suitable clothes or eating well, and resenting their parents unwillingness to buckle down and do something that'll pay the bills more reliably.
