All benitez has done is open up a debate that has raged on for years. What is a big club? Would you class Chelsea as a big club, because if you do, then Everton must also qualify.
For a team to be classified as a big club, they need to sustain success over decades. They need the support of a large dedicated fan base, they have to have tradition, history, respect, and above all, a name that is known and respected across the world. In the premiership, you have got three teams who are regarded as 'big' clubs, because they have all the points mentioned above - Arsenal, manchester United and Liverpool. These three are not just big clubs, but they are giants of world football.
Chelsea, as yet, cannot qualify as a big club, because they have not sustained there success for long enough. I am sure they will, but for now they fall into the same catagory as Manchester City, Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur.
For all the supporters of the aforementioned teams, please don't take this the wrong way, for your clubs are still big clubs in the eyes of the English Game, but not in the terms of world football.

Everyone knows Rafa for his composure, but surely no-one can disallow him the chance to let off a little steam after that. He didn't really mean to offend, he didn't even really say 'Everton are a small club' he just said that all small clubs do is go to big clubs and defend. And that's what everton did. If i'm small and I went to fight Tyson, I'd defend with everything I had, why, cos he's bigger. But if I went to fight my friend of similar build, I'd give as I got. If Everton see themselves at our level why the 'parking-of-the-bus' tactics?? Would Barca come to Anfield and cram their penalty area with players? No, they'd go after the win. All he tried to make out is that Everton made themselves out to be a smaller club, afraid of the big-boys, reverting to negativity, happy to scuttle away across Stanley Park with a draw...does that sound like a big club to you?

HEY!
i'm an everton fan and see how mad i was knowing that!
it's total bulls***. i mean even the very arrogant chelsea won't show disrespect like thhhhhhhhhhhat!
oh man shut up man
but everton is really not a small club,if they are, then how about fulham? wigan? man'city? sheffield? watford? HUH?
at least everton wacked his a** by giving them a draw at their home ground. they wacked their a** before by thrashing them 3-0 you remember? everton has a LONG history and they always have what it takes to stay in the top half of the premiership.
SMALL CLUB? BENITEZ YOU MORON GO KISS MY A**

Until Everton win anything then WHO ARE THEY?
Benitez is not only right but shows that Everton are bunch of wimps in todays game. They should try to win the game instead of crapping themselves in their own half.

he's right. my little brother is an everton fanitic who flys to every home game from northern ireland says they are a small team. this is the reason he follows them.
you just have to look at their fortunes the year they qualified for europe after coming 4th. the lack of class was shown up in spades. 11 hard grafters and very little class will always be shown up for what it is in the long run
