I've been playing for maybe 4 months, so obviously I'm not great yet... I don't want to spend a fortune, but don't want something that's going to crap out on me in a few months... Any suggestions on what I should look for?

get a squire stratocaster (made by fender). they are very solid guitars with a good sound. they are also pretty easy to upgrade later if you wanna keep your same guitar and a better tone! they are very versitile which is good since you are just learning and probly havent really found your "sound" yet! GOOD LUCK!

There are plenty of 'brands' out there no doubt.

You do want to get into a guitar that feels good to your hands, delivers quality sound and maintains some craftsmanship. These qualities may be more important than you realize as it is imperative that you own a guitar that is inspirational to play.

Most importantly, don't buy any guitar without touching it first. It's impossible to grade the quality of the guitar without touching, feeling and playing it first.

And, don't be afraid to spend a few more dollars on a guitar that will stand the test of time and give you many years of performance and pleasure.

Best Wishes!

I agree with Sammy. I've been playing for 20 years. If you think your going to be playing for a long time and it's going to be a passion, pick up an Ibenez or Fender. If you got the $$$ pick up a Gibson.

i started out on ibanez. always got compliments on it being a nice starter guitar. like a lot of beginners, i got a pakcage for 2-300 which comes with everything including amp/cord to start. the amp sucks but when u get better u can always upgrade!!
merry playing :D

Get a Fender strat, a mexican strat. The American strats are alot more expensive than the mexican ones. Go buy one for a couple hundred and then put better pickups in it and it'll sound great.
