An aglet or aiglet is a small plastic or steel cladding on the top of shoelaces (or any variety of lace, although shoelaces are the main ordinarily referenced) that retains the twine from unraveling.

Its called a ferrule - (but that may be specific to my part of the world). The same term (boot-lace ferrule) is applied to a similarly shaped electric cable terminator.
