“We’ve got to ask, why is this man [Osama bin Laden] is so popular around the world? Why are people so supportive of him in many countries ... that are riddled with poverty? ... He’s been out in these countries for decades, building roads, building schools, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. ...

We have not done that.”

—US Sen. Patty Murray (D–Wash.)

For those of you who don't know Patty Murray she is a little farther left than Howard Dean. She is way out of touch with everyone in Washington State except in two counties, King and Pierce, where the large population centers are. She is an extreme Liberal who would want to declare war on Santa if Bush tried to make him an ally.

Just because Bin Laden buys supporters around the world does not make him a good person. The US does not go around the world building facilities to make people like us. We try to educate and provide aid so those countries can pick themselves up(albeit we have done a poor job whether Rep Or Dem president)

Oh for crying out loud. Look at the context. Students asked why people in the Middle East would admire bin Laden. Her comments were not about praising bin Laden himself, she described work that he had done that is praiseworthy, if he in fact did that work. If bin Laden did in fact build hospitals and schools and give food to the poor, then this would tend to give him a good reputation in that part of the world. Doesn't mean that he's not a murderous radical zealot. You don't have to like Patty Murray's politics, but, especially taken in the context of having been asked a question, there is nothing wrong with what she said about bin Laden if what she said was true. Did he not build hospitals, etc?

If you don't make any effort to understand Bin Laden, then you may win the battle but you lose the war. I don't think those comments indicate that it's time to send the man a dozen roses, it's time to find him and eliminate him. But why sentence us to fighting another Bin Laden a generation from now?

Do you not realize how terrorists gain sympathizers? They will work for the betterment of the community in order to get people to trust them.

Militias in Iraq are paying the men who are unemployed to fight. That is why they can keep recruiting.

Brainwashing and indoctrination is not as effective unless the person is a willing participant.

We must understand our enemy if we are to defeat him.

Why would telling people the truth get her a nickname like that?

No, she will probably be known as "Honest Pat" for daring to tell the obvious to the remaining 28%ers who are too dull to understand why their tactics are causing America to lose the war on terror.
