There is no significance, it is just an investment vehicle that pays interest and your money is readily available should you want it. It is basically a collection of notes of varying durations from 1 month to one year.

You can leave your money in for any amount of time, relatively risk free, but very little return.

The money market consists of short term securities such as T-bills, commercial paper, and bankers acceptances. You will typically get a better return than you would if you put the money in a savings account with your local bank.
