You will have to replace the hinge pins in the door...you can find them at your local auto parts store for like 10.00-15.00 bucks or so...

Assuming the door was not damaged(like from an accident) lifting up on the door as you close it it might work. If that's the case then you may need to loosen and allign the latch on the door edge or the striker on the body to meet up with each other properly. Another possibility is that the hinges are bent or misaligned or that the hinge pins or bushings on the pins are worn.

This is all assuming there is nothing caught in the door opening like the seat belt for example that may stop it and that the latch is working properly

It's hard to say without visually seeing ti for a diagnosis but a simple fix might be the hook which is part of the latch is in the closed door position. to check 1. open the door and look at the latch which is on the side of the door. 2. Then with one hand hold the door handle, either in inside or outside one in the opening door position. 3. then with a screwdriver or pen you could use your finger but I dont recommend that unless you know what your doing, cycle / move the hook inside the latch back and forth then set it to the position so that it retracts out of the way of the striker post which is the 2" nub that it latches and is attached to the door jam. You have to be somewhat mechanically inclined to do this.

You are either going to have to adjust the door or the locking mechanism or likely both.. no real way around it
