I have an HP colorjet printer and want to use it. The toner is REALLY expensive. I want to print in one color. Black. Can I buy just the black toner cartriged and use that. Or do I have to buy all 4 at $400 dollars

As you've figured out, they don't make their money on the printer, they make it on the consumables.

I believe the 1500L has separate cartridges for each color. You can buy just the black cartridge.

multri-color catridge printers will only work if all the four catrdiges have ink on them. if you're composition is all black (like regular text), only the black ink will be consumed or you can set the printer software to specifically print in black only. Then all you need to replace is the black cartridge when you've out of it.
