I have an '86 El Camino. Currently, it's been painted purple, and it has a carb'd 350 from a GMC 1 ton van in it, mated to a TH350 trans. I payed $1700 for it. I've seen original El Camino's go for $7,000 on ebay and higher. So my plan is to get a TBI 305(it's original engine), and paint it the original colors, and try to sell it for much more than i payed for it. Do you think an original el camino would sell for more than one that has a 350 in it and is purple? Do you think my plan is a good idea?

Well, sure, if you are selling to an inexperienced buyer. You can't just repaint it with the original colors and expect someone to fall for it. If you want to know how much it might sell for go to kellybluebook.com.

i dunno man, thats kinda a risky business. ive never really thought those years to be that big of a thing yet. maybe in years to come. for now, id just drive it, have fun, and then look at selling it in years to come. i just bought a 1970 El Camino, all original(yet needs work, but runs, etc.) for a little less then what you paid for yours, and I dont plan on putting a whole lot of money (like some guys do alot) into it, expecting to get a big return. from everyone ive talked to thats restored, and done customs, etc., you never really get the fully amount of money (especially your labor) back when you sell it. hope that helps.
