Put a thermometer next to it. If it is too far off, it may need adjustment. If it can't be adjusted, replace it.

Replacing a furnace usually does not save money unless there is a problem with it, or you purchase a more cost efficient and energy efficient furnace.

Our programable thermostat has paid for itself. Don't replace the furnace until it dies; you're not going to save that much money on a furnace.

If you have an old style thermostat that you set the temperature on a new programmable one will save you money. You can set it up to lower the temperature automatically at night, and when you are at work, and set it to start warming up the house 1/2 hour before you get up or get home (and there is an override that you can use for a vacation, mine helped a lot)

If the thermostat is functioning, it won't save any money to replace it. Thermostats don't go bad (usually)

If it is working leave it alone. If you want to try to conserve energy, you can purchase a programmable thermostat. They can save you money in the long run.
