I can only tell you this -
When I first started hunting, I was advised to chew tobacco to keep the snakes away. I was also advised to chew it when hiking in the summer. I have now for years done as advised and I have yet to see a snake when I am hunting and hiking.

I think so, when I grew some bacca on my allotment in the UK I never saw one snake all the time it was growing.
