Whats wrong with the transmission on my 2001 dodge stratus?

The transmission on my 01 stratus all of a sudden just quit working with out any warning? I can start the car and act as I am shifting through all gears, it just does nothing. I drained the fluid(it was clean as could be). It does make a noise like it would be something internally wrong but I dont know? Any ideas? Dont want to have to replace the transmission if I dont have to.

you can fix this by going out and buying a chevy it will runn all day

This is an automatic? I don't know about the Dodge Stratus specifically, but perhaps the linkage broke?
