i notice this too. my wife is black and dont give a damn about paying parking tickets or nicor or anything. i try to change this in her but its tough. she would rather get new shoes.

there shoud be a class teaching the importance of credit for all high schoolers regardless of race or creed. its ruining our nation and keeps the banks rich and the poor poor. think about it. a guy who makes 30k pays 20% interest but a guy who makes 100k pays 5%. why? cuz of the economic conditions. this is crap.

there are alot of whites with bad credit too, but i feel the issue. here is an idea, stop voting for democrats as local government. they keep you down, yet you keep on voting for them. interesting, no?

This is a matter of culture, not race.

One reason is that some people have a sense that they are entitled to have all the crap that people on TV have. The truth is that people are not nearly as prosperous or as neat as the people on TV.

Impressing others with bling now seems to be more important to some people than impressing a mortgage application officer with good credit several years from now.

People with bad credit pay through the nose for everything, in nonpayment penalties, returned check fees, late fees and humongous interest. And everyone pays more when some people just don't pay at all. The credit card companies do not actually ever lose: they have it all worked out.

The entire US economy is based on people buying crap they do not need and cannot afford with money they have not yet earned, to impress people they do not know.

my credit is pretty good, but my husband's is a mess. we wouldn't even be able to rent an apartment if i had to rely on my husband's credit. i think that a lot of people have bad credit because they spend more than we should on material things and then when it comes time to pay bills there's no money left. im actually going through this with my husband because we have a joint account, and he'll spend the money in the account until it overdrafts. ive stressed to him that we have bills to pay and we cant afford to keep paying overdraft charges, but he wont listen, so i got my own account. i think the best way to educate our kids about it is to lead by example. also stress to them that you cant buy a house or a car with bad credit.

Stop succumbing to stereotypes and comic material. I am a Black man with good credit and I pay my bills on time. i've always worked, have been married for almost 21 years and have 2 wonderful daughters who I love dearly and a wonderful wife I couldn't imagine living without. And NO, I'm not the only one in existence.

$.02 has a point about the higher interest rates, but that isn't exclusive to the black community. Anyone with bad credit has to pay exhorbitant interest rates in order to get credit. This really makes it tough to break the 'bad credit' cycle, since it's tough to ever pay anything off. It's a vicious cycle.

I think this question has more to do with a person's class level. Lower class people (class in terms of income), don't have many options laid out for them. Things like saving, investing, and spending money wisely aren't passed down. And for someone to take care of their finances they must first be educated.

Im not black, but i will give you my honest answer...
I think that deep inside, lots of black people hurt inside, and feel inferior to others.
To try to compensate for this void, blacks buy sneakers, cars, and lots of other junk to try to show everyone that they are on the same level as they think others...say whites, are.
Since credit is so easy to get in this country, it is given even to people who should not really have it.

My bad credit isn't my fault. My aunt used my social security number on credit cards since I was a kid. I don't hate her for it, just disappointed.

speak for yourself. I was told to value my credit. I just didn't listen.

I think being poor has a negative impact on your credit worthiness.

Plus, don't underestimate the impact of the black social tax; Which is the higher rates we pay for car loans, mortgage loans, home owners in surance, car insurance, ect.
