No files are deleted during a defrag, they are simply re-arranged on the HDD. It's like re-arranging a file folder in a more efficient order. The HDD then can access the program files more quickly. When programs are loaded or downloaded to the HDD, the files are written "willie nillie" onto the HDD. That's what is referred to as "fragmented files". Say you load a antivirus program onto the HDD, the files are written to a bunch of different places on the drive's disks, defrag moves the files back into their proper file folder so the heads on the HDD don't have to search the whole disk array to find the file it needs to run the program properly. That's what speeds the computer up after the defrag is done. The HDD spends less time seaching for files. So, the bottom line is, after loading new programs onto your computer, it's a good idea to go head and do a defrag. Unfortunatly, as you use programs the files tend to get out of order, so you must keep doing defrags to keep the speeds up on your computer.

still not sure I am clear. there are two parts to defragging. the first part analyzes and says yes defrag tha volume, or nope, no defrag necessito. if yours says it is necessary, then there should be a command available there to tell it to go ahead.
