I don't think we should observe a form of Columbus Day;
He did not "discover" the Americas. The Tainos, a whole other people, were already in the "New" World before Columbus and the Europeans showed up and ruined their peaceful life by forcing them into the encomienda system -- a very cruel, harsh system that eventually wiped out the Tainos.

Columbus's encounter was, however, very significant in the Americas, in one good way. Columbus proved that nautical devices invented could be used at sea, and he proved to Europe that a long voyage could take place. He had a hand at influncing other navigators to explore.

Columbus actually discovered the Bahamas on Oct 12, 1492. The other claims about discovering America are pure myth.

Columbus wasn't even the first white guy to set foot in the western hemisphere (not that being the first white guy to do so would have made him anything extraordinary anyway). But as someone already pointed out, it's already observed.
