This is an old one. It's called Tryst, by Elswyth Thane.

It takes place in England in the early 1900s. A young woman and her family (father and aunt) move into a rental so her father can do research. The room at the top of the stairs is to remain closed they are told; the inhabitant has disappeared on assignment in India. The girl, Sabrina, gets in, starts to read his books and check out his things, falling in love with him, sight unseen. The young man, in the meantime, feels an overwhelming need to go back home - but he's crossed over. What's to become of this couple?

The only thing I wish was different would be the age difference between the young girl and the soldier, but that wasn't unheard of back then. It was written in 1939, but the story is timeless.

Hard to say as it depends on my mood however I have a few favorites that I go back to often for a reread:
A knight in shining armour - Jude Devereaux
Flowers from the storm - Laura Kinsale
Walking after midnight - Karen Robards (suspense/romance)
Ravished - Amanda Quick (humor/suspense/romance)

I really don't have a single favorite book I have many. I do have a favorite series though and that would be the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn.
