This may be one way you may contribute to make the world a better place.
"Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be worthy of the trust of thy neighbor, and look upon him with a bright and friendly face. Be a treasure to the poor, an admonisher to the rich, an answerer of the cry of the needy, a preserver of the sanctity of thy pledge. Be fair in thy judgment, and guarded in thy speech. Be unjust to no man, and show all meekness to all men. Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. Let integrity and uprightness distinguish all thine acts. Be a home for the stranger, a balm to the suffering, a tower of strength for the fugitive. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring. Be an ornament to the countenance of truth, a crown to the brow of fidelity, a pillar of the temple of righteousness, a breath of life to the body of mankind, an ensign of the hosts of justice, a luminary above the horizon of virtue, a dew to the soil of the human heart, an ark on the ocean of knowledge, a sun in the heaven of bounty, a gem on the diadem of wisdom, a shining light in the firmament of thy generation, a fruit upon the tree of humility."

There is nothing one man can do to make the world a better place, so instead, you should focus on making the lives of those close to you better. It is much more realistic and will affect you more directly. Plus, don't you want to see your friends and family happy?

Live your life according to the following principles:

Know that when you help another, you help yourself as well.
And that when you hurt someone else, you are also hurt.

Know that we are all connected, throughout space and time, with all creation in the web of being. All of your actions and words can have immensely far-reaching consequences, so speak and act accordingly.
Be responsible - respond to the needs of others less fortunate than yourself.
Have integrity - never betray your ideals, those principles you know to be true.
Have empathy and care for all living things.

Hey, I never said it was going to be easy.

Enlighten us with a story. Share a book. Buy a vagabond a treat. Telephone at random. Become a vegetarian. Play the still sad music of humanity.

If you perform one act of service every day of your life, over a lifetime, the world will be incredibly better! If each of us did that, just think of the possibilities.

Follow whatever path that appeals to you in life, but in your interactions with other people conduct yourself in accordance with a set of basic ethical principles (such as fairness, honesty, courtesy, etc.)--and occasionally throw in some random acts of kindness).
