We have a Netgear Router MR814 v2 which has been working fine with our 3 home pc's for over a year now. We have just lost the wireless connection with the third pc which has a Belkin802.11g 54Mbps usb. Its just not picking up the Netgear at all. I have checked all cables etc., unplugged everything and rebooted the Netgear router to no avail.

It shows that the Belkin is connected and good signal strength, but still can't connect to internet. I went into the troubleshooter for networking and it told me to configure the TCP settings which I did under "run" then command.
It then says no operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while its had its media state disconnected.

Now it shows connection is set to 6?? instead of what it was before which I can't remember!(sorry am confused as to what this means).

I have gone into the Netgear Smart Wizard and in "attached devices" under Router Status it now doesn't show the third pc at all, only the other two. This is weird!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have actually done a system restore going back quite a few weeks as it appears there was a software conflict with the router!! All working fine now, hurray!

Personally, I would recommend buying a netgear card for the computer using a belkin one. I have quite a bit of experience with networks, and that would seem wise. Cards aren't that expensive anymore, and you can probably pick one up for about 10-15 bucks at anywhere like walmart, target, circuit city, etc.

Another alternative it to try and update the firmware on the netgear router, or the belking card.

If you have installed any new software on that computer lately, you may want to uninstall it temporarily to see if it is the problem, because very frequently, when you install new software, its drivers conflict. Especially if it was something like, a new keyboard/mouse, monitor, speakers, sound card, hard drive, etc. But games, and just regular software can cause conflict too.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

Sounds like something has messed up your TCP/IP Settings, (this is the address of your computer, bit like a telephone number), normally you would use a system called DHCP, on your Router, which gives out these "Phone Numbers" to your PC's automatically, the settings can also be set manually if you understand how TCP/IP networking works, however, it can also go very wrong if you don't, (BTW: I've been an IT Techie for 5 years and am still learning some advanced networking stuff now), to set it back to Automatic go to your PC with the problem, click Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, in here should be a list of all network devices on the PC, you will probably have two entries, Local Area Connection and Wireless Connection, these may be followed by a number if you have reinstalled software etc. right click on the Wireless connection and select properties, then in a scrolly box near the top you should see an entry that says Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click that, then click Properties just below it, you should then see various boxes asking for things like IP Address and Default Gateway etc. above that should be a radio button that says "Obtain an IP address automatically" make sure this is selected and do the same for "Obtain DNS server automatically" this will allow your PC to fetch settings from the router, click OK and OK again, wait a moment or two while the settings update and you should be working again.

Hi. Looked up the stats on the MR814 v2 and it appears to be an 802.11b only router i.e. the Belkin 802.11g usb will NOT work. Check if the settings for all the wireless cards/adapters are still set 802.11b and NOT g.

From your explanation it sounds everything is done the right way.I would suggest you to check the other computers that are working fine and see how their connection status are,you can now use it to configure the third one that is not working. Please do not go and purchase anything until you have tried all important method of troubleshooting.Good-luck
