The Internet is simply a series of worldwide computer networks linked together, communicating almost instantly with each other via telephone lines and satellite linkup. The Internet is many tens of thousands of these networks communicating with one another, like a big network or web!
It can also be said that the Internet is:
· A network of networks based on the TCP/IP protocols.
· A community of people who use and develop these networks.
· A compilation of resources than can be accessed from these networks.
The secret of the Internet is a network protocol called TCP/IP.
· TCP = Transmission Control Protocol, and
· IP = Internet Protocol.
TCP/IP is a coding system that lets computers electronically describe data to each other across a network. Any type of computer can be connected to this web of networks as long as it speaks the universal Internet language, TCP/IP.
