Long press play then it will shut-off. Just to make sure slide the hold button to lock it so its not accidently switched on.

OFF: You can't switch it "off," but you can flip the switch at the top left corner which will lock it. When you see the orange, it is locked. That way, if any button is pressed, it won't respond to it. Kind of like your computer freezing.
ON: Unlock it by flipping the same switch back. You will see white.
It would be nice if they made on and off switchs though...

To do what you have asked to know how to do it is very simple all that you need to do is hold down the play button.

just hold down the play button and an apple will come on the screen and the it will turn off

yeh u have to hold down the play button however if it gets stuck they u have to press the menu button
