Jim Henson was often asked what Gonzo was. To which he usually answered "A wierdo" That was Gonzo's answer normally until the Muppet movie "Muppets From Outer Space". In that movie you find that Gonzo is actually from another planet. Gonzo is just GONZO.

Gonzo is supposedly a bird, a buzzard, but he has also been said to be a representation of a human being or an anthropomorphized animal, but sports a bizarre, non-human appearance.
I tend to believe he is a bird since he is always with the chickens and loves Camilla the chicken and seen chasing after her on several shows.
In reality terms he is a frackle which is a classification of muppet monster. So all those monsters you see on the muppets fall under this "frackle" classification.
Interesting stuff I know, hope it works for you.
Enjoy!

In the Muppets from Space movie, Gonzo is from a different planet and his "people" come to earth to take him home so I think hes some sort of alien or something.

Gonzo actually is his own species of monster/animal. Normaly they do resemble a type of man or beast but gonzo is his own deal.

what he resembles is the inner child's chaos of fun, imagination, and willingness to do what he has to do.
