Namaste

When you add "ji" to someone's name ... what does that mean? Like guruji ...

What affectionate little names do you give a child (boy child? girl child?) ... I have heard Bangaroo ... said to mean 'golden' and is for an especially good or nice child..
Others? These are names a parent might call a son or daughter?

And, women of my own generation called me "sister" which I loved .. ... are there others you can recall?

And... appa and amma ...
what do you call your grandparents ... or your own sisters and brothers ...?

Really anything that might be nice to add here?

Oh, yes... I have heard men tease each other by calling someone "Boss!" ..."That is ok, boss!" ..... please?

It would make a nice little book, this subject.
Someone here ought to write it up!!!!

Peace & Love

Thanks for showing interest the interest.

We Indians add 'Ji' and the end of the name or relation the show the respect we pay to others.

India is a country which one can say is 'A country with diversified cultures unified'. As you mentioned 'Appa' and 'Amma', you probably met South Indians. To know more about such stuff you gotta be in touch with Indians from almost all the states of India. Only then you will come to know the various ways and terms taht we Indians use that mean exactly the same.

People may call you as 'Behenji' meaning respectable sister, or 'Chaichi' meaning elder sister in the south, or call you 'Madamji' blending your respectably term with ours. that's the glory of India. It has the capability of blending in any two distinct cultures.

Writing a book on these topics is a good suggestion. You can mail me if ever you require to know more. I'd be glad to help you out with this.

:-)

I'd say they'll do it when they have a special relationship to these specific friends. there's no word for best friend of the parent, so I guess people find that since they consider their best friends as brothers or sisters or almost so, then auntie/uncle is as good a word as it gets. I am pretty sure my husband's best friend will get referred to as uncle C by our future kids. He's just a very important man in our lives. We see him every day and my husband and him spend a lot of time together and talk about near everything.
