You guys have the greatest heart-moving movies. I can name hundreds of them. Forest gump , Fight Club, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, the Truman Show and many more.
Don't misunderstand me please. I know it is wrong to think that cinema should be close to reality, but the guys who created these movies are American too. There should be some similarties .Again " Don't misunderstand me"

I never meant beauty as in beautiful buildings and nice streets. America is filled with all of that and even more. I was talking about spiritual beauty. Again to those who don't bother reading the details. I know it's wrong to compare movies to reality but the people who made the movies are Americans. There should be some resemblance.

Ravensong. Thanks for your answer. It's the first respectable answer I got and you are like the only one who understood what I was talking about.
What you said was really nice and I guess I just needed to wander around more.

Come to some of the smaller towns in the Midwest or middle of the country. You will find more of what you are looking for. Everyone seams to forget the the whole country does not include NY, and Cal. People here will give you the shirt off their back.I know this for a fact. Several years ago my daughter had cancer, I had to quit working to take care of her. I had several people help us out from, helping to pay the rent, to babysitting and making my husband and I go out to relieve stress.

Hollywood has a tendancy to romantise movies. It can work on both extremes - for example, "When Harry met Sally", might not have been so romantic, if the movie, had shown the dirtier and darker sides of New York. Or Thirteen, might not have been so gripping, if it had just focused on the glamourous side of Los Angeles.
How the location fits into the story, can be very important, even if its not immediatly apparent.
The reality is, America is just like anywhere else - it has pretty parts and ugly parts.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some think skyscrapers are nice, others like the outdoors. Older movies have the most actual real landscape in them. Movies made by Americans are not always filmed in U.S. 95% movies are made for entertainment. fiction not fact. Great building, oceans, mountains, forests, plains, dessert S.W.,catus forests, lakes, rivers, swamps, plains, fields of grass and corn. Anything else you want??

Well, it depends which state you visit, and what cities. America's a huge country. For example, If you go to Detroit, Michigan, you wont find any beauty. But if you go a little south to Beverly Hills, Michigan, then you find beautiful homes and yards, and its just a pretty city. See, some places are just dirty and not just interesting and beautiful. But if you go to another city or state you can find something different. I suggest Flordia or Tennessee for beautiful landscape and surroundings : ]

Art may imitate art, but only art that elicits an emotional response is going to be successful. So it would follow that movies that make us feel good about ourselves, humanity, life, our country, are going to do well.

I also don't think this is an exclusively American phenomenon.

That's what makes the movies so fun, they completely obscure the reality of things. It's just like when you think of Paris you think of romance and beauty and then you go there and see it is quite filthy. No offense to the city of Paris.

if you're looking for some films which exhibit the grim reality of american life, try Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness, Elephant, American Heart, Freeway (1&2), and Mysterious Skin. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Who wants to look at reality when watching a movie? They make documentaries for that kind of thing.
