The seams of the laminate are beginning to raise slightly and I want to know if polyurathane can be applied to the entire laminate floor without causing future damage or wear problems. Could this cause a moisture problem under the laminate? Thanks for any GOOD advice from anyone with laminate floor experience.

I agree with MrMatz polyurethane may not be applied to the surface of your laminate and that most likely your laminate will need to be replaced. The tongues of the locking system are probably damaged beyond repair. I may be able to help with your problem. I have a few questions. When was your floor installed? Did you hire a contractor to install or did you do it yourself? Is our subloor under the laminate wood or concrete? Installation method?

Good Luck

Sure, polyurethane can be spread over laminate flooring but you will ruin the floor.

Polyurethane is intended for wood, laminate floors (pergo) have a resin film on the top surface that will resist anything from adhering to it.

If the seams of the laminate are raising, then you already have a moisture problem under the floor. Laminate must have a moisture barrier installed first or moisture will wick up from below and ruin the floor. You will get a similar problem if the floor is located in a high humidity area like a kitchen or bathroom. Furthermore, once you get raised seams on laminate- they are never going to shrink back even if you dehumifiy enough to dry out the floor.

If you want to solve the problem replace the floor with a new professional installation or buy some carpet...

I don't think the poly would be a good idea. It's not meant for that.

If you are looking to improve the finish, get some finish specifically for laminate flooring at a Home Depot or Lowe's...you'll find it by the floor cleaners. You can apply it with a mop or one of those painting pads-foam with a handle.

As for the seams coming up, I would first glue it back down with some flooring adhesive, then if the seam doesn't lay together well, if there is a gap, get some epoxy from Home Depot that is as close to color of your floor, or clear and run a bead of the epoxy down the seam for extra hold and so dirt doesn't get in it. That is what we did in one of our houses. That was over a year ago and it has held up great.

You can use a 2 part Epoxy clear coat on Laminate. Buy that at Mennards or Depot. That is extremely hard coating that goes on with a sheeps wool pad. A gallon on laminate goes a very long way. Really good stuff.

Polurathane is too soft and is made for wood.

It could flake off because it didn't adhere well to the laminate. Check with the manufacturer of the floor.
