Half-life 2 is a great choice. You have to go buy it of course.. but afterwards.. You can download whatever mods you'd like to play. Some are online and others are campaign.
Another very fun game to play is a game called Gunz Online. It's free.

Check em out..

I got my son to type this answer, as he's the one who knows about this sort of thing.

It depends on what you want really, so far you've tried across what's available in the genre. If you want something with quite a feeling of community, I'd suggest you go for something like UT2004 - a sci-fi FPS game (unfortunately however, not free).
It's quite unlike Battlefield 2, in that it's much more centred around the fragging aspects of FPS games. There's a number of gametypes, (including one which is quite like Battlefield 2, natch) including the basics such as DeathMatch and Capture the Flag. If you use IRC as well (Internet Relay Chat) on Quakenet, you'll find the whole thing a lot more fun, with pickup games etc. There's also different levels of skill - there's loads of "noob" servers for new starters, and then of course the better servers for the kids who've been around for a while.

If it isn't for you, I would've recommended BF2 but seeing as you don't like it, another FPS game worth recommending is Counter-Strike Source, bundled with Half-Life 2, mentioned above - a slightly less friendly game but with tonnes more people than UT2004 - makes it easier to find a game, at least.

Unfortunately, there aren't that many FPS games I know of that're free, except for Warsow ( http://www.warsow.net/ ) - check that out first, in a similar vein to UT2004, but with cel-shaded graphics. Don't let that put you off, though, it's free and it does its job pretty well.
