After the recent development of the renaming of Bangalore to Bangaluru, there have been lot of reviews on the city itself. So why not write on the places that can be visited during weekends when you get bored with Bangalore. I know there may some proud Bangaloreans who can never get bored of Bangalore. But sometimes, you need to take a break and enjoy fresh air in the countryside.

Please bear with me as I keep on mentioning Bangalore even now;;;;).

1)Nirvana
True to its name, Nirvana is a secluded place about 6 hours drive from Bangalore and an hour’s drive from Chikmangulur. Of all the places that I have visited around Bangalore, this place has been the best. Very few are aware of thisplace as it is privately owned.
Nirvana is one of the Tea States in the Chikmangulur area with scenic beauty. It is spread across 150 acres and is cut off from the city life, even the town life, even the vilage life..;-].

So you are like almost in a jungle. The guest house provided for the visitors is also named Nirvana. The nearest habitat is like 40 kms away. One can find all those places that one has seen in adventurous movies, a pond, a guest house surrounded by hills from all sides with badminton, volleyball, lawn tennis courts and sports equipments. If you are lucky, you can catch a glimpse of a deer or peacock roaming around your window. Sometimes wild dogs...tooo...;-)

The guest house provides decent accomodation, prepared food and other basic amenities required, for the price of Rs. 500/- per occupant per two days. There are some Honeymoon and Family packages too. Little costlier. If you are in a group, Nirvana also provides you with camp fire facilities set up and music system for njoying your night. But believe me, the money would be worth spent.

2) Yelagiri Hills
Less than 3 hours journey from Bangalore, Elagiri is a good place to visit for one day picnic. It is supposed to be the highest place in Tamil Nadu. Does not feel that high but yes climbing down is an experience. This place is famous for its picturesque surroundings.

There is a small lake which provides boat rides and some high machaans to get a view of this beautiful place. There is a vegetarian restaurant just at the entrance of the main town near the Police station. That place is the best among all I guess, based on our research. Am not able to recollect the name of the restaurant. They will provide you with Cricket Kit and Badminton Kit while the food is being prepared.;-)

How to reach this place, you can take morning 6 O’clock Lalbaugh to Jolarpet Junction and a bus/van from there to Elagiri Hills. If you are 4 or more members and can afford a four/six wheeler, then you can enjoy the drive all along.

3) SivaGanga
If you are looking for a pure trekking experience around Bangalore, SivaGanga is the place. Popularly referred to as Dakshina Kasi(Southern Varanasi), Sivaganga is a pilgrim centre of great significance. Two temples are located on the top of this hill which is well over 4000 ft. Getting to the top is nothing less than sheer excitement.

My description may not help but yes hopefully my recommendation might.;-)
You got to visit this place while you are in Bangalore. Great view, Great exercise and definitely a great experience.

SivaGanga base can be reached in around 2-3 hours from bangalore towards Kengeri down Mysore Road. Fifteen of us boys rented a 16 seater van for this terrific experience. But one can also try Bike travel.

Food choice is minimal. But on the way, you can find a Kamat which is affordable and worthy.
Make sure you carry some water bottles while climbing the hill and on reaching top, beware of the vaanar sena(monkeys). For us, it was just a matter of handling younger vaanars.;-)

4) Mysore
Need I tell you more about this place. Do visit it if you want to have a glimpse of the traditional, cultural, peaceful, pollution-free, beautiful place. Hope you agree if it is called the PUNE of Karnataka in some ways.;-)

About 130 kms from Bangalore, traffic will be very heavy. It is better to travel by 4-wheeler. Even bike travel will be equally exciting except for the evening/night travel when it is really difficult to drive on the same road with no divider in between due to the ever ongoing road widening.

Make sure you skip your breakfast if travelling in the morning and stop at Kamat(about 40 kms from Blr) for a delicious North Karnataka style food.

5) Sravanabelagola
Situated between the Indragiri hills and Chandragiri hills, Sravanabelagola is a great Jain Centre. Thousands of pilgrims flock to see the gigantic statue of Jain Saint. The main attraction is the statue of Gomateswara(Bahubali) carved from a single stone in the 10th century(?). This statue stands 17m tall and is visible from as long as 20 kms away. It is one of the largest monolithic statues in the world.

Bike travel is recommended as the roads are great with very less traffic. It is about 170km from Bangalore towards Chikmangalur with a diversion after Belur Hospital. I decided about this travel at 12.30 pm on a Saturday afternoon and was able to finish it off by 9 pm the same day including the climbing up of the 1000 steps(with more than 100 steps being the most steep ones I ever climbed), Thanks to the company of a friend of mine and my Pulsar........

Ooty, Tirupati, Hosur and others can also be visited while in Bangalore. I missed some other places due to either lack of company or mis-planning. If you can suggest any other that I missed, they can be my next destinations. ;-)

Invariably it is Nandi Hills very near to Bangalore. It is 59 Kms from Bangalore and 4850 feet above sea level. Good picnic place for cool and scenic spot. Another spot is Mekedatu it is around 95 Kms from Bangalore via Kanakapura. Mekedatu means 'goad's leap' where the river Kaveri flows in a narrow gorge made by the river. Hogenekal falls is another place which is around 183 kms from Bangalore. Hogenekal falls means smoking rock - falls. A picturesque and entertaining place. One can have coracle boat ride.

There is nothing in Bangalore, you must travel in minimum 100 kms radius to reach good scenic places. If you havent been to Mysore that should be the first
