The original dance came from less-than-respectable origins in Buenos Aires (and Montevideo), was changed somewhat when it travelled to France and then Britain just before WW I, and made a loop back to the Americas, reaching some fame with Rudolph Valentino's dancing it on film and the great Carlos Gardel's popularity in the '20's and '30's.
There are actually 3 dances now called tango, the Argentine (which has its own subgroups), the US ballroom style (which, along with foxtrot, waltz and Viennese waltz comprise the "smooth" dances in American ballroom), and Modern Tango (which, along with Slow Foxtrot, Slow Waltz, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep, comprise the Standard dances in International Ballroom).

Tango is a social dance form originating in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay. The musical styles that evolved together with the dance are also known as "tango".

Early tango was known as tango criollo, or simply tango. Today, there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine Tango, Ballroom tango (American and International styles), Finnish tango, Chinese tango, and vintage tangos. The Argentine tango is often regarded as the "authentic" tango since it is closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay, though other types of tango have developed into mature dances in their own right.

Music and dance elements of tango are popular in activities related to dancing, such as figure skating, synchronized swimming, etc., because of its dramatic feeling and its cultural associations with romance and love.

yes the Tango most people say its from Argentina BUT it originated in Uruguay. The music they danced to was called la comparsita. Canasta also comes from Uruguay.
anywho the dance is a close to a fast and agressive walk with the male leading and sometimes there is intertwining of the feet( the female sometimes kicks low between and around the legs with hips twisting ) The closest thing to it is a watlz if you can picture people dancing closer and more agressively and not in a down up up fasion likethe walts but more a step out low low low low & up then change direction.

It's a latin ballroom dance, often set to fast paced music. Obviously, two people dance together. It starts out with both dancers having their right legs intertwined. It is also called the dance of love, for it's dramatic dance moves, and the closeness of both partners.
