it all depends on what you want to get out of the content. If your a sports fan..DirecTV blows Dish out of the water. IF your a family and just want some channels for the kids at a good price. DISH is the way to go. If you want HD channels. At the moment it is DISH but in the near future DirecTv will offer 100 HD channels. As far as cost they kind of equal each other. However DISH does offer 180 channels that includes Encore movie channels for the same price DirecTv does without Encore. I prefer DirecTv for the ease of the DVR all the sports channels and the customer service.,,and the most important fact of all...My service has NEVER went out as it did with DISH

I've had both and each has something a little different about it that makes it different, and that little difference is something that only you can decide which one you would prefer. Ok, some of it I guess would depend on where you live. I am in the middle of nowhere in Mass. With Dish I had no problem getting network stations, they just came with the package, as did stations, which I no longer know what they are called but were originally the WB and WPIX and a few other Super Stations, and I seem to think that we got IFC for free. Ok, now with DirectTV, if you are in range of getting any of the networks you will have to pull them in with an antenna, or if you aren't you will have to petition the stations to get them onto the satellite, proving that you are out of range. It's a pain, but for all but CBS,it usually works. The real positive here is that you get both east and west coast feeds, so, if you miss something and you live on the east coast you can catch it later that night, which is one of the reasons why I'm now with DirectTV.
Also, for me, the people who were setting up my home theater only worked with DirectTV, so we took it and never changed, and have been happy with it. I do believe the costs are about the same, but come to think of it we have had better service when we called DirectTV.

A lot of people have had good experience with dish network. They offer better content, and in my opinion they have a far better deal then DirecTV in terms of pricing, monthly commitment and terms of contract.
