around that price...i'd recommend dell! they have really cheap computers. i got my dell latitude d610 for about $1000. i don't recommend compaq because i had one and it crashed 3 times within 2 years, also after the 2nd year, the monitor connection died.

apple and sony are also good brands, but they are probably more than $1000.

Sony, too. HP grow to be once solid. not any better. same with Dell. solid pcs, regardless of the indisputable fact that the laptops are crap lately. Acer is a 2d tier. not maximum helpful, yet ok. same for Gateway. purchase all the RAM you're able to have adequate money.

I know you could get very good laptops from HP, and Macs for around that price.

if you really want a laptop then i would go with dell otherwise if you are willing to take risks tehn build your own desktop

i bought my sony vaio laptop for 999.99,

it hasnt given me much trouble but.... make sure the sales chappies dont do you on the HD capacity!!! they told me i had forty but only have 20 usable (gb)

Toshiba, they are the best :-) Steer clear of HP, they die after a year.
