I wouldn't make the promise in the first place if I thought I couldn't stick to it, so unless something unavoidable comes up last minute which meant I could not stick to a promise, I would stick to it.

if the promise is for the benefit of only one person, then it should be able to be broken if the other person disagrees or leaves later on.

for example, if I was in a relationship and she told me to promise that I was hers for ever, I could say yes and be hers. But if later, SHE's the one who breaks up then I can stop the promise because the promise only refers to her benefit.

but if, for example, I promise to give money in exchange for a bike, I must keep that promise when I get the bike.

promises MUST have two sides of equal or agreed value.

Of course I would and do, no point making a promise if your not going to stick to it.

Oh YES , but it was a matter of life and death then I might have to break the promise. So what do you want to keep secret?

If you are going to make promises you should be able to keep them no matter what, its kind of mean to not keep what you say.
