By facing your fear. It can't be overcome by thinking about it or just reading about it in a book.
If you are afraid of spiders, I have no love for them myself, get a book and read about their lives. THEN go into a garden and look at them objectively as an observer - they're not going to leap out and devour you are they? They're really so interesting and unique. You may still not like spiders but you can experience them without freaking out!
Whatever your fear is you can only overcome being scared by facing and learning about it. Not tucking it deep away to fester.

Sneak up on yourself and yell BOO!!
Hide around the corner. When you walk up, jump out and yell.
After a while you get used to it.

turn on like every light in my house, turn on the TV, go on the computer, get a snack, close all the bathroom doors (bloody mary) ohh thats freaks me out

Depends on what it is. If it's an irrational fear, then I just remind myself that it's just that...irrational. If not, I just turn on a LOT of lights,call a friend, and try to keep my mind off it!
