It's not so much what you talk about, but that you act interested in him and friendly. Relax! If he's taking you to the dance he's probably wondering the same thing.
Sounds like you are just getting to know each other. If you feel awkward talking at first you could mention things about the dance to get you started. There's always something to comment on when you talk about the environment around you. That might loosen both of you up to start talking about other things.
Act interested in what he has to say. Smile and ask him open ended questions.
Have fun!

Laugh about the other people on thte dance floor that don't know how to dance, or just be awkward in a funny kind of way. For example: "I ahte it when the conversation goes silent. It makes my skin crawl. *pause* So, uh....how's about this weather, eh?" Haha, that always made the guys i danced with chuckle. I hope i helped oyu out. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS! =D

How lame your parents are, after they take pictures of the two of you.
How his car smells.
About how you both look.
How crappy the food is.
Make fun of the other kids and how stupid they look in formal wear.
Talk about music. Since music will the playing there, it won't have to be completely random.
And dance. Don't have to talk when you're dancing.
