Your Sony will open only CD's. There are still some bugs in the advisor program.

I did a search on Google and everything points to it being just a CD-Rom
The Vista install Disk is a DVD-Rom and therefore you will need one in order to install Vista
If you are using XP now my advice is to wait until it's time to replace your computer before getting Vista as you will run into many upgrade problems
But if you insist, DVD-RW drives are cheap enough to buy and easy enough to install
depending on where you buy it from you are looking at about $40+tax+shipping and a 2Hr (generous) install time
Most stores will install it for you for a few extra dollars
(some even free on day of purchase)

When did you run the adviser test? Microsoft had trouble with the program because they coulnt predict the requirements for vista were before it was released. Vista can run with a CD Drive, but most things will be using dvd-roms.
